12 January 1949 – Margaret ‘Bill’ Allen

Butch Margaret ‘Bill’ Allen hammered an elderly woman to death to earn her death penalty.

The 42-year-old had readily confessed that she’d killed widow Nancy Chadwick. So she was sentenced to death. She was hanged by Albert Pierrepoint at Strangeways in Manchester for murder. And, in doing so, Allen became the first woman in 12 years to be hanged in Britain.
