Two men, two murders, two hangings.

Walter Martyn was hanged in Heywood for strangling his girlfriend.

He grabbed Edith Griffiths by the throat accidentally throttling her, then tried to cover it up by tying a handkerchief around her neck to make it look like suicide. The hotel worker was hanged in Manchester, aged just 23.

John Tarkenter slit his wife’s throat as she lay in bed after a row.

The 41-year-old from Oldham then went off to the pub where he confessed to his brother and asked him to buy his last drink. He was tried and sentenced to death on 22 November and hanged just 21 days later.
