7 December 1903 – James Duffy
James Duffy was hanged for throttling his girlfriend Ellen Newman to death.
The widower had a history of violence having already done time for assaulting divorcee Newman.
Once night they had a huge row and the 46-year-old strangled her. Immediately realising what he’d done though, he called the police and so his guilt was undeniable. Duffy was sentenced to death at Durham Assizes and swung on this day in 1903.
