3 December 1901 – Patrick McKenna

Patrick McKenna killed his wife Anne McKenna in a crime of passion. Despite his remorse and a petition featuring 22,000 names, he was still sentenced to death at Strangeways.

McKenna was hanged, aged 53, by Henry Pierrepoint and James Billington, who was very ill. It turned out that they knew each other from having lived close to each other and in a sharp twist of fate McKenna would be Billington’s last hanging as he died just 10 days later, aged 54.
