A childhood rife with neglect and abuse meant that Shawn Paul Humphries led a life of crime.

As an adult, Humphries was executed by lethal injection, aged 34, for the murder of shop worker Dickie Smith. During one armed robbery, Smith the shop keeper made a move for something under the counter and Humphries instinctively pulled the trigger and shot him in the head.

At his South Carolina execution, Humphries mouthed ‘I’m sorry’ to one of Smith’s sisters, who described it as the ‘greatest gift that I could have ever received’.
