2 December 1859 – John Brown
John Brown was hanged, aged 59, for his attempts to overthrow slavery.
An anarchic abolitionist, Brown was tried by the US state of Virginia for treason, after he led an uprising. His attempt to seize arms for slaves so they could fight their way out of their shackles resulted in seven killings. He is said to have been hailed as one who planted the seeds of civil rights.
And in case you were wondering, the song ‘John Brown’s Body’ was written after him and became the rousing marching anthem for the Unionist soldiers during the American Civil War.
Apologies – we got our facts a day out and posted this for part of yesterday too. Thanks to Lou for pointing this out.
