24 November 1881 – Alfred Gough

Alfred Gough was put to death for raping and killing a 6-year-old girl.

A hawker by trade, Gough was seen with Eleanor Wendle after she left her blackberry picking friends. She told then she was going to follow Gough and ask him for a toy from his wheelbarrow. But she was never to return. Her violated, strangled body was found and immediate suspicion centred on Gough, especially after he told someone he knew details about the crime.

Though he denied it, he was tried at Leicester Assizes on 2 November and finally admitted to his crime while waiting for his death sentence to be carried out. The 34-year-old was hanged in Derby on 24 November 1881.
