2 November 1984 – Velma Barfield
Barfield became the first woman to be executed in America since the penalty was resurrected in 1976. Her sentence was in return for killing her boyfriend 56-year-old Stuart Taylor.
She’d become worried that he’d twigged she was stealing from him, so she fed him lethal beers or cups of tea mixed with her special ingredient – an arsenic-based rat poison. He died days later and the autopsy revealed the crippling cocktail.
She was jailed for his murder where it emerged that she was not a poisoning virgin. She’d killed her own mother in much the same way, along with two elderly people – John Henry Lee and Dollie Edwards as well as her first husband Thomas Barfield after she’d stolen money from them. She was given her own lethal cocktail in 1984, aged 52.
