1 November 1920 – Kevin Barry

The first person to be hanged during the Irish War of Independence paid the price for his beliefs today when he was hanged for his part in an IRA raid.

Two months earlier, 18-year-old Kevin Barry had been captured following an ambush on a lorry, during which three British soldiers had died.

Barry was sentenced to death by hanging, rather than firing squad, because he was tried in a British court, which refused to treat him as a prisoner of war, insisting instead that he was a murderer.
