21 October 1979 – Jesse Bishop
Jesse Bishop earned notoriety as the last Nevadan citizen to be sent to the gas chamber.
Having been found guilty of murdering David Ballard in a Las Vegas Casino, his stint on death row had be longer than the perpetrator had hoped. After all, Bishop had come to terms with his sentence and wanted it over with. Indeed the 46-year-old had come close once before, but as he was heading for up for his execution, an appeal had been lodged on his behalf.
It was rejected, but the delay ensured Bishop became the first man to be executed in Nevada since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 and yet the State’s last to be gassed to death. Nevada has since turned to lethal injections as its method of despatch.
