6 October 1909 – Martha Rendell

Martha Rendell

Martha Rendell was the first woman executed in Western Australia.

Ruthless Rendell

She was said to have killed her three step-children with hydrochloric acid in 1908. But she claimed she was treating Arthur, Annie and Olive Morris for diptheria. No-one believed her story and she was duly sent to the gallows.

Apparently the only woman to be hanged at Freemantle prison also haunts the church – her ghostly face appeared to become etched on a window the day after her hanging according to legend.
