9 September 1826 – John Wainwright

Lancashire lad John Wainwright was hanged for murder on this day in 1826.

Wainwright was sent to the gallows at Lancaster Castle after he was found guilty of stabbing Thomas Pomfret. His was a double execution after he was strung up alongside highway robber Patrick Rafferty.
