5 September 1930 – Carl Panzram

Unrepentant to the end, serial killer Carl Panzram was sent to the gallows for a lifetime of gratuitous violence and crime.

As he was being hooded and prepared for execution at Leavenworth in Kansas, Panzram spat ‘Hurry up you Hoosier bastard, I could kill 10 men while you’re fooling around’. And he wasn’t wrong. The convict confessed to 23 murders across the US from New York to California, ranging from rape and murder to cold-blooded killing.

Born to Prussian immigrants in Minnesota, Panzram’s life of crime started at the seemingly innocent age of eight, when he was arrested for being drunk. But the possible trigger was when his family had him packed off to a young offenders’ institute as part of a plea bargain following a robbery, where he was to be abused. This began the spiral of abuse and abuser.

At 14 he was gang raped and he went on to say that he would rape men in turn to feel dominant and to humiliate his victims. Panzram would later shoot 10 sailors in America, as well as rape and kill an 11-year-old boy, plus hack six crocodile hunters to death during a trip to Africa.

Back in the US, he also raped and killed two boys, stoning one to death and strangling the other with a belt. But it was for killing prison guard Robert Warnke in Leavenworth that Panzram was sentenced to death. He was hanged, aged 39.
