25 July 1894 – Lewis Holder

Self defence is a perfectly feasible motive for murder. That is, unless you’ve shot someone in the back, been found wearing your victim’s clothes and been handling their cattle.

Despite such damning evidence the Oklahoma jury was still undecided as to whether George Bickford had been killed in cold blood or Holder had merely been defending himself against his once partner.

Unable to agree, they filed a guilty verdict. One unsuccessful appeal later and Holder was strung up for the murder.
