13 June 1810 – Richard Jones & Melinda Mapson

Here’s an unusual one. Richard Jones was done for pretending to be someone else.

The 34-year-old was imprisoned at Newgate and hanged for impersonation. Luckily for Rory Bremner, it’s no longer a criminal offence…

And today was a busy day on the scaffold.

Alongside the pretend Dick, we found Melinda Mapson – the only female prisoner at Newgate to swing in 1810 for her crime.

A servant, Mapson was sentenced to death for stealing from her employer. Her execution took place near Debtors’ Door on this day, when she was 30 years old.
