6 May 1902 – George Woolfe

The last ever hanging at Newgate took place today in 1902.

And the dubious honour went to George Woolfe who was strung up for murder. He was found guilty of killing his girlfriend after the 21-year-old stabbed Charlotte Cheeseman to death.

Similarly, William Billington became the last executioner to carry out the sentence at Newgate – from that point onwards, men were carted off to Pentonville and women to Holloway.
