9 March 1981 – Steven Timothy Judy

Steven Timothy JudyPut me down or I’ll kill again – that’s pretty much what Steven Timothy Judy told the jury during the trial that led to his execution.

So, how could the jury refuse an offer like that? Judy was found guilty of murdering a 21-year-old woman and her three young children after he’d flashed them while they were driving along a highway in Indiana one day in April 1979.

He made out like the car was faulty, but in actual fact there was nothing wrong. Instead he loosened something in the young family’s car so it wouldn’t start, then offered them a lift.

Evil intent

He drove out a little way before stopping and raping the young mother, strangling her and tossing her into a nearby river, before chucking her three children (aged between two and five) in after her. The three children were found drowned.

Judy was found guilty of murdering Terry Lee Chasteen and her three children, Misty Ann, Steve and Mark pretty sharpish. And he didn’t last long on death row either. A mere two years after the crime, in 1981, he was sat in the electric chair, and became the first person to be executed in Indiana since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.
