25 February 1913 – George Cunliffe

Navy man George Cunliffe was executed on this day in 1913 for slitting his girlfriend’s throat.

The Devon courts found him guilty of killing Kate Butler in Plymouth, using a razor just three months beforehand.

Cunliffe made no attempt at an appeal and was therefore sent to the gallows. His hanging was carried out by John Ellis and George Brown in Exeter.
