23 February 1909 – Jeremiah O’Connor

Coal had a killer effect on Mary Donnelly. First her dad died in a coal mining accident and then she fell prey to coal-miner-cum-murderer Jeremiah O’Connor.

O’Connor was found guilty of slaying Mary Donnelly in a vicious murder that left the victim severely mutilated. And that meant one thing: O’Connor earned the death penalty.

He was executed in Durham by hangman duo Henry Pierrepoint and William Willis. It took place on this day 23 February 1909, when he was aged 52.
