The leaders of a brutal gang of rapists were strung up for sexually assaulting three women over a two-day rampage during the American Civil War.
Unionist soldiers James Grippen and Benjamin Redding were hanged at Hilton Head on 21 November 1864. They’d been found guilty of raping Eusebia Heape on 17 August along with Florence Mew and Mrs Mary McTier on 19 August 1864.
Just three months later their crimes had caught up with them and they were executed, while the others members of the gang failed to be called to justice.
